Overview

A Brazilian Butt Lift reshapes the buttocks by liposuctioning fat from areas like the abdomen, flanks or back and re-injecting it into the buttocks. Because it uses the patient's own fat, it simultaneously slims the harvest areas and augments the buttocks for a contoured result.

It carries the highest mortality risk of any cosmetic procedure when performed unsafely: injecting fat into or beneath the gluteal muscle can cause a fatal fat embolism. Safe technique injects only into the subcutaneous layer, ideally with ultrasound guidance. This makes surgeon credentials and the operating facility's safety standards non-negotiable — a point that matters acutely when travelling.

Techniques

Standard fat-transfer BBL

Liposuction harvest, fat processing, and subcutaneous re-injection into the buttocks.

Ultrasound-guided BBL

Real-time ultrasound confirms fat is placed only in the safe subcutaneous plane — a major safety advance.

Skinny / athletic BBL

Emphasises contouring and modest augmentation for slimmer patients with limited donor fat.

The process

  1. 1Consultation, body assessment and donor-site planning
  2. 2Anaesthesia (general or deep sedation)
  3. 3Liposuction of donor areas
  4. 4Purification of harvested fat
  5. 5Subcutaneous re-injection into the buttocks

Recovery timeline

Weeks 1–2

No sitting directly on the buttocks; special cushion used. Swelling and bruising at donor and injection sites.

Weeks 2–6

Gradual return to sitting; compression garment worn; some transferred fat reabsorbs.

Months 3–6

Final shape settles once fat 'take' stabilises.

Candidacy

  • Enough donor fat to harvest
  • Good general health and stable weight
  • Non-smoker around surgery
  • Willing to follow strict post-op positioning (no sitting directly)

What to ask

  • Are you board-certified in plastic surgery, and how many BBLs do you perform?
  • Do you use ultrasound guidance, and do you inject only subcutaneously?
  • Is the procedure done in an accredited surgical facility with an anaesthesiologist?
  • What is your complication and emergency protocol if I'm travelling home soon after?

Risks

  • Fat embolism (potentially fatal if injected too deep)
  • Infection
  • Asymmetry or contour irregularity
  • Variable fat survival
  • Seroma at donor sites

Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) abroad: frequently asked questions

Which country is best for BBL surgery?

No single country is "best" for brazilian butt lift (bbl) — it depends on the clinic, not the border. The most-travelled-for destinations we cover are Turkey and Mexico; compare them on cost and the MedTraveling Transparency Index instead of picking by reputation.

What country has the cheapest BBL?

Abroad, brazilian butt lift (bbl) typically runs $3,000–$15,000 depending on the country and clinic, roughly 25% below a typical US private price of about $12,000. We track live published prices by destination — open the cost guide for Turkey and Mexico to see clinic-by-clinic figures rather than a single average.

Is a BBL dangerous?

Done unsafely it has the highest death rate of any cosmetic surgery, due to fat embolism. Done by a board-certified surgeon injecting only subcutaneously (ideally with ultrasound), the risk is dramatically lower. Surgeon choice is critical.

How long until I can sit normally?

Most surgeons restrict direct sitting for about 2 weeks, using a special cushion, then a gradual return over several weeks.

How much of the fat survives?

Typically 60–80% of transferred fat survives long-term; the rest is reabsorbed in the first few months, which surgeons account for when grafting.
